We appreciate that every learner is unique with a different learning potential and a distinct learning style. Therefore, we not only try to provide a variety of learning experiences to exploit the students’ full potential but also identify and use appropriate task-specific tools to measure their progress. We follow formative and summative assessment methods to evaluate the learners’ true potential. The two tasks are not considered mutually exclusive; rather the summative assessment task is a culmination of the formative assessments carried out during the academic year of the learner.
The focus at the primary level is on developing language and numerical skills and also create an awareness about their immediate environment. There is continuous evaluation throughout the year of students’ participation in class assignments, activities and projects. In grade IV and V, short written tests are taken at the end of each topic for every subject. Sometimes two or more topics are clubbed together for a grade. Monthly assessments are conducted for English, Math and Vernacular. Quantification of certain affective skills are done as well. The first formal assessment happens at the end of the 1st term for class V. Students appear for a final summative examination at the end of level V before moving to the middle level.
Continuous assessments take place throughout the year and students are assessed on their subject knowledge on the basis of their performance in trans-disciplinary projects, oral and aural assignments, class-tests (held every week on different subjects as per prior schedule), open book examinations and terminal examination. Students are expected to participate in two inter-disciplinary projects and make a presentation on completion of the same. The projects, class tests etc are formative in nature and comprise the internal assessment that constitute 25 – 30% of the marks in the terminal examinations. The First term exams held in August are formative in nature. Final exams are held in March and this takes into account the final exam performance and all that the student has done in the formative assessments throughout the year.
